Afterglow
Once the media hubbub had died down and all of the world was again calm, it was time to look forward to Thursday, a day of pleasure and sight seeing at the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, also courtesy of Intel. After all, we had flown all this way, right?
But before we get into any of that, I figured you guys might like a few tips if you're going to travel over there:
- Travel with Beckham - If at all possible, go with David Beckham (or his lookalike). The Chinese people have an almost cult following of the man.
- Whisky and Green Tea is your friend - This was a little tip from my new friend at PC Online. Apparently, it doesn't taste like anything but green tea, making it a great "Ladies' drink." I stopped asking at that point.
- Haggle - No prices are really inflexible that we found in China, except maybe food. But beware - there is a Chinese law of bargaining that once you accept the price, you will be expected to pay. To walk away from a deal once accepted by both parties with any viable alternative is against the law.
- Check your Credit Cards - Both Geoff and I found our Visa cards did not work over there. What was entirely ironic was staring at Jackie Chan in the walkway to my return flight home, saying "Visa - it's everywhere you want to be" in both English and Chinese. I hate you, Murphy.
- Eat it, but don't ask what it is - Chances are it will taste good, or at least different. And you don't want to know what you just put in your mouth. And if you don't like it, definitely don't ask. It doesn't help it to taste better, I promise.
- If at all possible, go with a local - You will get better prices and responses if you're travelling with someone who is native to China. It'll also keep you out of trouble... maybe.
